On August 3, 1492, three ships left the Spanish port of Palos seeking a western oceanic route to China. With the support of Spain’s King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, the leader of the expedition, Christopher Columbus, was convinced that he would find an easier, more direct route to China and its wealth of spices, porcelain, silk and pearls, than the routes that had already been established. Instead, Columbus and his crew stumbled upon an undiscovered new world.
